Most business owners treat their website like a store with the lights off: something is happening in there, but nobody is watching. Meanwhile the website quietly records everything: who came, from where, what they read, and where they gave up. You do not need dashboards and a data analyst. You need five numbers, checked once a month, and the habit of acting on them.
Which five numbers should you actually watch?
- Visitors per month. The baseline. Is it growing, flat or shrinking? Direction matters more than the number itself.
- Where they come from. Google search, Facebook, ads, direct. This tells you which marketing is working and which is theater.
- Your most-visited pages. Often surprising, and actionable: your busiest page deserves your best call to action.
- Conversions. Inquiries, bookings, orders. The number the website exists for. If you track nothing else, track this.
- Mobile share and speed. Most Filipino visitors browse on phones; if the mobile experience is slow, every other number is smaller than it should be.
Which metrics can you safely ignore?
Most of them. Pageviews-per-session, bounce rate obsession, live visitor counters and follower counts feel important and decide nothing. The test for any metric is simple: if it changed tomorrow, would you do something differently? If not, it is decoration. This is the same discipline as ads: one number that ties to money beats ten that tie to feelings.
What tools do you need?
Two free ones. Google Analytics records what visitors do on your site, and Google Search Console shows which searches you appear for and where you rank, which also tells you whether your SEO is moving. Both take minutes to install on a properly built site, and we wire them into every website we ship by default.
Monthly ritual, fifteen minutes: open analytics, write the five numbers next to last month's, and pick exactly one action. More traffic to a winning page, one fix to a leaking one. Twelve small corrections a year compound remarkably.
